Lighthouse escapes |
Lighthouses, located along Victoria's coastal cliff tops, were built as beacons to warn ships about the potentially treacherous coastline. While some still act as beacons today, a selection now provide romantic accommodation in the lighthouse keepers' cottages. There are a number of lighthouses that welcome overnight guests along the Great Ocean Road. The Cape Nelson Lighthouse, located twelve kilometres from Portland, has two beautifully appointed light keepers' cottages. Imbued with a rich nautical history, Cape Nelson Lighthouse was witness to many high seas dramas in the 1800s. Still in operation today, the lighthouse offers refurbished stylish self-contained accommodation on a site with spectacular views and a hint of romance of its nautical past. Isabella's Café (left) located in the former stables of the Cape Nelson Lighthouse precinct, serves gourmet lunches daily (except on Tuesdays in winter) and dinners from Wednesday until Saturday. Award-winning Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse Lodge, located at the base of the Lady Bay Lighthouses, is within walking distance to the front entrance of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse Lodge has been fully renovated and features three bedrooms, kitchen, lounge and outdoor area. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at Pippies by the Bay, Flagstaff Hill's restaurant. Visitors can climb to the top of mainland Australia's oldest lighthouse, Cape Otway Lightstation, situated 90 metres above the wild Southern Ocean, and see why so many tragic shipwrecks occurred on the isolated and rugged Shipwreck Coast. The lightstation has a range of heritage accommodation including four former manager's houses (the largest can accommodate up to 16 guests) and two bed and breakfasts. The café, located in the original Assistant Lighthouse Keeper's cottage in front of the lighthouse, is open daily and serves tasty food and great coffee. |
