Chateau Terre Blanche |
Château Terre Blanche
Located in the south of France in the heart of the Cathar country, in the region known as the Quercorb, and nestled in the foothills of the majestic Pyrenees, lies the bastide town of Chalabre. Filled with all the character and charm of a medieval town, and in an idyllic rural setting, it was known as the ‘Terre Privilegiee’ as in 1210AD, the King of France exempted its citizens from paying certain taxes. Bastide towns were built as the "new towns" of the 13th century, built both to be defensively strong and to regenerate the regions that had been ravaged by wars. It was built to a very distinctive design, from a central square following a grid pattern, where the streets radiate out and where the central square, the hub of town life, is decoratively arcaded, often with a free standing, covered market area.
Today the market still takes place every Saturday, making full use of the old design with its four avenues lined with trickling fountains, plane and chestnut trees, and which has now become one of the most picturesque markets in the region. For the guests of Château Terre Blanche, the village of Chalabre offers a good selection of shops, with it’s restaurant and cafes, supermarket, charcuterie, doctors and pharmacy. It has an excellent boulangerie, making it a delight to buy your bread, fresh and delicious from the baker's ovens every morning. Dominating the skyline, is the Château Chalabre, a Medieval Theme Park with it’s craft workshops, exhibitions, medieval combat, and hosting an annual jousting tournament.
Uniquely situated within the town's walls is the luxurious, newly renovated Château Terre Blanche, open all year round for private or business rental. The Château has four well-appointed oversized bedrooms, accommodating eight people, all with lavish ensuite bathrooms, finished to the highest modern European standards. There is the option for more accommodation upon request. Living areas comprise a library, Blue Salon, Grand Salon with baroque hand-carved wooden fireplace, gymnasium and dining room with flowing south-facing outdoor terrace, perfect for alfresco dining.
The Château offers four exquisite oversized bedrooms with soaring ornate ceilings and original fireplaces. All have been renovated to their former glory with silk drapes and the ultimate in comfort with the addition of new, luxurious, kingsize beds or coupling king singles topped with new microcloud technology. Fine soft bed linen are draped in embroidered silks and velvets, heaped with cushions for the maximum possible comfort. A true luxury Château rental in the south of France.
The original construction of the Château started in late 1911 using stone from the local Quarry of D'Alet, situated between Limoux and Chalabre. After many years of use (and misuse during war years) the chateau is now owned by an Australian company, and finally ready for guests again. Also on offer are bespoke tours, cookery classes and cultural activities. |
