WHEN TO GO Because of its size, spanning thousands of kilometres, China's weather varies from very cold in the north in winter to extremely hot in summer in some of the southern and western areas. Beijing varies from -20C at night in winter to 38C some days in summer. It has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with about 140 million Chinese tourists and 4.4 million international visitors a year. Guangzhou may have typhoons between July and September. Turpan in the north-west (China's hottest place) reaches 47C in summer. EVENTS: Chinese people love celebrations, and these are often noisy affairs with drums, dragons, fireworks, and lots of food. around early February: Chinese New Year (or Spring Festival). Many traditional dishes. early April: Qingming Festival (to commemorate the dead) mid-June: Dragon Boat Festival: a time for eating rice dumplings. late September: Mid-autumn festival. Giving and eating mooncakes. There are many other festivals in various places around the country.
