Beach beasts

When and where can we see these weird - and truly wonderful - animals walking on the beach.

Every year the hugely talented Dutch creator of these Strandbeests, Theo Jansen, organizes five beach sessions that will be published on his site at the end of February. Visitors can register for this on the site. Only 100 people can register for each beach session.

Strandbeest means 'beach beasts' and, over the last three decades, many 'beests' have been dreamed up, sketched and painstakingly made.

Take a look at these...

Many people want to know: What is the function of PET bottles in the animals? The PET bottles are a type of wind stomach for the animals. The wind is stored with the help of the wings. The wings on the back of the beast wave in the wind, they are connected to a crankshaft, on the crankshaft are pumps that pump air into the PET bottles to high pressure. They can use that pressure to drive their muscles, for example, to walk or to drive senses.

A big beast may weigh about 180kg and be made with an average of two to three thousand metres of PVC tubing.

Because of the intricacy of these 'beests' people also want to know, how much time does the design process of a large beach animal take?

Jensen explains: 'In the spring I bring a new animal to the beach, which I have built in the winter. The process of thinking and design precedes building. During the summer I do all kinds of experiments with the sand, the wind and the water. At the end of the summer I make all sorts of adjustments. In other words the process for developing a new strandbeest takes an average of one year
