Ottawa's great milestone |
Canada Day 2017 - Canada's 150th birthday - will be heralded with exciting, free public events on Parliament Hill and throughout downtown all day, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display in the evening. Recover on July 2 at the Interprovincial Picnic on the Bridge (above). Stretching between Ottawa and Gatineau, the Alexandra Bridge walkway will be dotted with specially created picnic spots to mark the special occasion. Ottawa and Gatineau are two cities that form one community. On July 2, 2017, residents and visitors from both sides of the Ottawa River will come together to enjoy a Canadian first: an Interprovincial Picnic on the Alexandra Bridge. The Picnic on the Bridge will be a breathtaking and memorable way to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, as the historic Royal Alexandra Bridge will be transformed into a lush green haven, where families and friends can picnic on the grass and enjoy majestic views of the Ottawa River.
A first for North America, Ottawa will be taken over by La Machine’s larger-than-life mechanical creatures roving the streets of downtown in a display of urban theatre in late July. See video... The largest children’s playground in Canada (shaped like the country) will be built in Ottawa by the award-winning TV program Giver.
Check out Inspiration Village in the ByWard Market neighbourhood, an incredible construction built entirely from shipping containers transformed into an aesthetic artistic installation, highlighting each of Canada’s provinces and territories. A core site for Ottawa 2017 programming from May 20 to September 4, 2017, this edgy-looking entertainment locale on York Street will be the site of a succession of special exhibits and performing arts events, each one showcasing Canada’s provinces and territories.
Don’t forget, Parks Canada is offering free admission to national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas throughout 2017, including free lockage on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. |
