Balancing rocks in Ottawa |
This annual event has just wrapped in Ottawa, Canada, but there is always next year if you would like to compete.
You need patience and a steady hand and great concentration - which is perhaps why it was born as a form of meditation ZEN, is now known as a form of “art of the earth” Land Art. The stones, rocks or pebbles are stacked without any help, gravity and balance are the only conditions accepted.

The practice for the use of the stones to build something is as old as civilization. During the Ottawa BAWI Festival (Balanced Art World International), artists from around the world gather at Remic Rapids on the Ottawa River to create whimsical balanced rock art sculptures that seem to defy gravity. Curling rock archways and families of inuksuit rise from the water, surrounded by curious ducks and geese.
This tranquil scene demonstrates why Balanced Rock Art, now known as Land Art, was developed as a form of meditation, with stones, rocks and pebbles stacked without assistance. Learn more...
