Sicily's writers' trail

The route of the Valley of the Temples combines the places where some of the greatest Sicilian writers lived. An itinerary full of artistic, archaeological and natural beauties, not to mention food and wine traditions.

Then there's the Kolymbetra Garden. Here history, myth, and literature blend together into the Caos, Luigi Pirandello’s home district near to Villa Seta, Agrigento, then Girgenti, his beloved city, whose characters have inspired Pirandello’s romances and short stories. The Cathedral preserves the “Letter of Devil”, a manuscript by Nun Maria Crocifissa, the blessed Corbera, ancestor of the Prince, mentioned by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa in the Gattopardo.

The typical Easter sweet of Favara is the Easter Lamb. It is a marzipan dessert stuffed with pistachio paste and covered with the so-called velata, meaning 'veiled' (using melted sugar). It is decorated with small bells, silver sugar pearls and a red flag. Favara is also known as the City of the Easter Lamb.

According to tradition, the dessert dates back to the early twentieth century, when it was prepared by the sisters of the College of Mary, located in the Batia neighbourhood, to remember Jesus as the Lamb of God. Visitors can watch the preparation of the cake and eat it during the Easter Lamb Festival that takes place at the Castle Chiaramonte every year, during the Easter period.

In the Farm Cultural Park near Rupe Atenea, a path leads to the country house of the Baron Agnello, located among barns, olive groves and fallow fields. This is the landscape dear to Simonetta Agnello Hornby,  the one that has inspired most of her novels set in Sicily,  in the mythical places of her childhood memories.

Here is the spectacular Scala dei Turchi, a white rock staircase that drops away directly  into the sea, then the kaleidoscopic Cathedral of Salt in Realmonte, carved in the salt rock, complete with bas-reliefs of saints, stoups and sacred vessels.
