Dining in Italy |
Italians are sociable and family-oriented, so it follows that dining is more than just refuelling. Almost any meal can readily become a celebration. While most locals like to eat in their own homes there are many options if they wish to eat out. Azienda: a farm shop selling products made on the property. Bar/caffe: as the name implies, serve beer and drinks, but usually also make coffee and serve small bar snacks. Birreria: a bar-café in the northern and central areas. Enoteca: a wine bar or bottle shop where snacks may or may not be served. Locanda: similar to a wine bar, quite often with outdoor tables, or a terrace. Osteria: evolved from an inn serving food, now friendly, relaxed places serving regional food. Paninoteca: a sandwich shop open in business hours. Pizzeria: makes pizza, of course, usually in a wood-fired oven in full view or the customers. Ristorante: a licensed restaurant, with waiters serving the full Italian menu, and higher prices than other eating places. Tavola caldo: satisfying 'hot table' food served cafeteria style. Trattoria: a relaxed dining spot, often family-run, like a café in other countries. Most restaurants charge coperta, a sort of 'cover charge' which includes the 'complimentary' pre-meal bread. Service (servizio) may be extra, or included, so check the bill. Tipping is not mandatory, but always appreciated. |
