Italy's football island |
There’s a lot more to Sicily than the Mafioso. The “big toe” to Italy’s boot is also the birthplace of the sonnet, home to the tallest active volcano in Europe, and according to many (who aren’t Greek) it has better Greek ruins than Greece itself. It’s also a foodie’s dream. Palermo, Sicily’s capital, was recently named as the European Capital of Street Food; matching the findings of Forbes magazine which listed it inside the top five cities in the world for this gastronomic characteristic.
The best way to see this is take a tour, and enjoy walking tours where you will sample the best of Sicily’s street food, led by local expert guides. You will see some of the world's most luscious produce.
Sample the food too. This is caponata where eggplants are chopped and fried, and then seasoned with sweet balsamic vinegar, capers, and sometimes pine nuts and raisins. The result is a sweet-and-sour salad that’s a delicious accompaniment to a meal.
Then there's arancini. Bite into one of these fried rice balls, and who knows what you might find within - anything from meat ragu to mozzarella to peas!
And - for something more familiar - perfectly cooked lamb.
Could this be you? Explore the fascinating culinary world of Sicily’s Capital as you visit the famous and bustling Vucciria and Mercato del Capo, outdoor markets, tasting different Sicilian treats along the way. Have an Apero - dinner in a charming place overlooking the saltpans during sunset - in front of one of the most peculiar landscape of Sicily: the Stagnone di Marsala. Enjoy a guided tour of the Villa Romana del Casale, built during the imperial age and famous for its precious mosaics, which constitute some of the best conserved in the entire Mediterranean basin. See ceramic artistry in Caltagirone, the Sicilian capital and stopover at the wine cellars of the Antica Tenuta del Nanfro for a guided visit and tasting of typical vintages from the area: Nero d'Avola and the Cerasuolo di Vittoria. |
