Beautiful Bhutan |
Bhutan is an enigmatic country where buying cigarettes is illegal, where rice is red, where chillies are not just a spice to be added to the food but an entire dish in itself, where men still wear tunics to work and where the prosperity of the nation is measured by Gross National Happiness of its people and not the gross national product.
Located in the heart of the Himalayan mountain range, this landlocked kingdom has some of the most beautiful valleys, rich in culture and architectural heritage. However, in recent years Bhutan has become a much sought after destination by the discerning travelers. This has led to boom in the hotel industry where top luxury hotels like Aman & Uma today co-exist with their local budget indigenous chains. However, still at a nascent stage as compared to rest of the world, there are many challenges it still has to overcome. Mr. Dasho Tobgay Dorji, an hotelier and the present President of the Hotel Association of Bhutan, began his service to the Royal Government of Bhutan in the court of the Third King. He has worked closely with Bhutan's good friend, Aung San Suu Kyi, also served as the first Bhutanese Ambassador in Geneva, Switzerland in 1985, and served as the Bhutanese Ambassador of Kuwait in 1994 before retiring into the Private sector.
The Royal Government of Bhutan first began Tourism in the year 1974, began to showcase the country's unique culture, traditions and breathtaking environment to the entire world. Tourism was then was privatised in the early 1990's and over time, has evolved in many positive ways on the basis of the "high-value, low-volume" policy. Today, Tourism is one of the highest income generators for the Kingdom. As much as he wishes for Tourism to continue its growth, he stresses the fact that it "should not", compromise Bhutan's environment and the high-value, low-volume tourism policy.
