If you have ever tried to dye anything, you know it is not easy. You need a lot of dye, and a huge amount of water. So why try to dye a river green? Does St Patrick's Day and the 'wearing of the green' mean anything? So that's the why. The 'when' is in time for March 17. The HOW is a little more complicated. Basically it involves a boat and some Chicago plumbers throwing dye into an already greenish river to turn it brighter green. This activity attracts huge crowds, even in Chicago’s chilly March temperatures at the tail-end of winter. Usually the dyeing starts early on the Saturday before St Patrick’s Day, and if you happen to be there you can stand on the riverbank east of Michigan Avenue, and west of Lake Shore Drive. Dress warmly as there is approximately two hours between the river dyeing and the parade which follows.
