A Swiss turnip festival - yes, you heard it right!
Turnips are not many people's favourite vegetables, but who would have thought of turning them into a festival centrepiece? The Rébechilbi Richterswil or Turnip Festival takes place later this year on Saturday November 10th. Interestingly, turnips have been carved decoratively for centuries. The first jack-o-lanterns were carved out of turnips. Only when the Irish tradition reached America did turnip carving turn into pumpkin. Persians also believed turnips were beneficial in treating the common cold. Today, the villagers of Richterswil on Lake Zurich have carried on this craft and display it annually at Europe's largest turnip festival. During the weeks leading up to the event, about 26 tonnes of these humble root vegetables are hollowed out and decorated to become sort of turnip Halloween lanterns! Of course there's then a parade and around ten thousand beautifully carved turnips are hung from houses and buildings, illuminating the village on the wintry night.
