Driverless train, Lausanne |
In Switzerland, the Lausanne Metro Line M2 in operation since October 2008 is swift and clean and used by around 25 million locals and visitors a year. But don't go looking for the driver. There is none.
The Line M2 is entirely automated, managed from a central command station, making it cheaper to operate and more flexible during peak hours. The stations are equipped with platform screen doors and dedicated station personnel are on hand to assist passengers. The six-kilometre line on a 360 metre slope (the steepest in Europe) runs from Ouchy to Epalinges, with the rubber-tyred train stopping at 14 stations on its 18-minute journey. The steepness and constraints in braking distance and deceleration mean that the train can actually travel faster upwards than downwards. |
