Wilpena Pound is calling |
The lure of Wilpena Pound It’s easy to understand why some people travel to the north of South Australia, just to see Wilpena Pound. This magnificent natural basin in the Flinders Ranges has some of the best hiking trails, bush walks and four-wheel drive (4WD) experiences in the country.
The attractions in the Flinders Ranges and Outback are as diverse as the landscape itself. Allow at least a week to scratch the surface. Noodling for opals: There’s something about opals that is so seductive. Many people spend their lives trying to find that perfect piece. Noodling (searching) for opals in the lunar landscape of Coober Pedy is a highlight. Stay in an underground house while you are there to escape the heat. It’s hard to say what the best attraction is. It could be the deserted homestead ruins, with desert winds whipping through. Or the par 72, 18-hole golf course, which is the only course in the world to have reciprocal rights with St Andrews in Scotland. Small towns act as gateways to great camping sites and spectacular scenery.
Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre draws thousands of people to its shores when it fills with water, which is a rare occurrence. The regeneration of the countryside is extraordinary. When empty, the lake is a giant salt pan with white crystals reflecting the sunlight. The rugged bowl of Wilpena Pound has been created from an ancient mountain range that has eroded over millions of years. Spanning about 100 kilometres, the sheer size of the amphitheatre can only truly be appreciated from the air. Why not go on a scenic flight and marvel at the spectacle below?
Journey back in time Take a steam powered ride on the historic Pichi Richi Railway from Quorn. Enjoy the sound and light shows at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre in Peterborough and at the Blinman Mine. Hike through the rocky pathways and past clear tricking water of Alligator Gorge. Drink beer at the iconic William Creek Hotel or Mungerannie Hotel. Travel further north and follow The Outback Loop road trip with stops at two more iconic Outback hotels - Innamincka and Birdsville. Visit the Wadlata Outback Centre and walk through its Tunnel of Time to learn the story of an ancient land, its people and treasures Down Under. Through the mouth of Max the giant “Ripper Lizard”, you’ll discover how the region evolved and highlights you shouldn't miss. |
