Put Peru's specialties on your plate

Peruvian cuisine is being hailed as this year's hottest ethnic cuisine, so let's get our tongues around the names of some of the dishes!

Anticuchos de Alpaca – yes, you guessed it, alpaca meat skewers marinated in a traditional antichurro sauce (mix of Andean roasted peppers, vinegar and garlic) served with chimichurri (fresh aromatic herbs macerated in oils and apple vinegar)

Pork Chicharrón – twice cooked crispy suckling pork belly served in a bun with caramelised sweet potato & orange puree, pickled daikon and malagueta chillies (spicy Andean chilli)

Quinoa Salad – a vegetarian option of a selection of organic seasonable vegetables served with a blend of quinoa (Andean grain) pron. KEEN-wah.

Arroz con Leche – creamy rice pudding served with poached green apples, pineapple and quinoa caramel.

And that's only the start of it....

The rising popularity of Peruvian cuisine worldwide was also recognised last month, with renowned Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez’s London restaurant, Lima, being awarded a coveted Michelin Star.

Martinez opened the London restaurant in 2012 following the great success of his flagship, Lima-based, Central Restaurante, and the same year, also opened Senzo in Cuzco in conjunction with a luxury five star hotel.

Peru boasts some of the world’s most acclaimed and award-winning restaurants, and is home to two restaurants featuring in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 list. Its capital Lima is known as the gastronomic capital of South America due to the variety and excellence of cuisine and epicurean talent on offer in the vibrant capital

Those hungry for even more can experience Intrepid’s Real Food Adventure Peru, an 11-day trip co-developed with Sydney chef, Peruvian-born Alejandro Saravia, and launching in April 2014 that will offer food fanatics authentic, grassroots food experiences throughout Peru. For more details.....
