Crocodile Hotel in Northern Territory |
Hoges’ is back! It’s 30 years ago that the now world-famous “Throw another shrimp on the barbie” advertisement aired in America, not only making Paul Hogan an international figure, but putting Kakadu on the world tourism map. The ad starts off with Hogan in the vastness of Kakadu saying “America, you look like you need a holiday: a fair dinkum holiday in the land of wonder, the land down-under.” They certainly listened because before the campaign, Australia was number 78 on the "most desired" vacation destination list for Americans, but rose to seven, three months after the launch, and soon became number one or two on Americans' list of ‘dream vacations’, remaining in that position for most of the next two decades. Hoges followed that up with the immortal Crocodile Dundee films based on the life of Rodney Ansell, who became famous for surviving 56 days in extremely remote and hostile country in the Northern Territory, and the American love affair with Kakadu – where many of the opening scenes were filmed – just got stronger and stronger. In many ways, the popularity of Crocodile Dundee was responsible for the development of the aptly-shaped Crocodile Hotel and Cooinda Lodge, so it is fitting they are celebrating Hoges in style with a series of Paul Hogan-themed weekends. Now, the Crocodile Hotel will offer its Celebrate Hoges packages on the weekends of 7-9 March and 14 – 16 March, while Cooinda Lodge will become Hoges Central for the weekends of 21 – 23 March and 28 – 30 March. During the Celebrate Hoges weekends guests will be able to watch Crocodile Dundee films throughout the weekend, enjoy a complimentary “shrimp entrée” when dining in the restaurant, a crocodile-themed gift pack and more: guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Paul Hogan character! |
