Queenstown, Tasmania |
Many people forget that there is another Queenstown in Tasmania, quite unlike the one in New Zealand, but with something it wants to celebrate too. Old and new are set to become one at Tasmania's Queenstown Heritage & Arts Festival this October (12 - 14), with avant-garde operatic performances and edgy sound, light and art installations vying for the spotlight alongside a 1912 'pop-up' comfort food kitchen and old-school delights including a gala dinner and local craft market. The result? An offbeat, fresh and bold event that can only be found in Tasmania. The Queenstown Heritage & Arts Festival is set in the historical township of Queenstown in Tasmania's western wilderness, 3.5 hours drive from both Hobart and Launceston. Once the world's wealthiest mining town, it has a rich heritage, with its dramatic lunar landscape, dense wildlife-inhabited forests, mysterious forgotten tramlines and mineshafts, and spectacular lookouts and waterfalls recently turning it into an attractive destination for artists, painters and writers in search of inspiration. This amalgamation of history and talent will come to the fore as part of the Queenstown Heritage & Arts Festival.
