Only in Okinawa

Okinawa rivals Hawaii as tourist numbers soar

With tourist numbers exceeding nine million in the Japanese fiscal year of 2017, Okinawa has surpassed Hawaii for the first time in numbers of visitors. This upward trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon as the Okinawa prefecture hopes to attract 12 million people by the fiscal year of 2021. The tropical haven has plenty to offer for tourists such as: the Karate Kaikan celebrating its first anniversary, the upcoming Okinawa International Movie Festival in April, and the flower carnival

Step back in time with the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom

Okinawa was an independent kingdom made up of a number of islands that continue to shine through their traditional performing arts, dialect, food and architecture. The Ryukyu Kingdom era was known as the “golden age of trade”, when Okinawa often traded with other East Asian countries. This gave birth to the deep, rich and unique Ryukyu culture that is so different to the Japan we think of today. From a trip to the World Heritage site Shurijo Castle, creating mesmerising traditional crafts like Bingata dye patterns, to admiring the graceful dance performances and cultural experiences offered at Ryukyu Mura - all are great ways to get acquainted with Okinawan culture.
