| Karelian food wins major award |

Karelian food has become one of the key attractions in Lakeland Finland’s North Karelia. Now this region has been awarded the prestigious, international European Region of Gastronomy Status 2024. This is celebrated with rich experiences that combine the purest food in the world and the original culture.
Parppeinpirtti, an authentic Karelian-style restaurant in North Karelia, has been awarded with the culinary award of Alfred Kordelin Foundation’s Jaakko Kolmonen Fund.
The restaurant is in a traditional wooden house, and is well known for its preservation and promotion of Karelian culture, cuisine and culinary art. Guests not only enjoy delicious Karelian food but also enjoy traditional kantele music as they dine.
Restaurant Bomba in the Karelian village of Nurmes has also launched a Karelian style menu called Valamo menu, highlighting local ingredients such as North Karelian berries, fish from Lake Pielinen, game meat like moose and deer, and products of the Valamo winery and distillery. The name Valamo refers to the Valamo Monastery, which has been the centre of Orthodox culture in Finland for 850 years. |
