Spare some time for Lower Austria

The Wine Route Lower Austria is one of the world's longest trails based on the topic of wine. At a length of 830 km (516 mi) it leads through eight wine growing areas passing through more than 150 villages associated with wine and about 1700 locations for wine loving bon vivants - from top modern wineries to cosy wine taverns to highly decorated gourmet restaurants.

The Wine Route Lower Austria not only leads to delights associated with wine, it also connects thermal regions, and places with a long history in wine making, including magnificent buildings such as the abbeys of Gøttweig or Klosterneuburg - whose wine traditions date back to the Middle Ages - or imposing wine estates in Baroque splendour are to be found side by side with wine shops and modern wineries. And there is more: the route is replete with great sights from widely ranging periods of history.

Visit an open-air Wine Village Museum

Farm life from centuries past is revived in Moschendorf located in South Burgenland. Tours of thatched-roof houses filled with artifacts and furniture transport you back by centuries. The Weinmuseum Moschendorf is also a popular venue for wine tastings, concerts, art exhibitions, and folk dance.?A visit to the wine museum Moschendorf takes you back in time.

Free from the constraints of a typical museum, the Weinmuseum Moschendorf breathes and functions as though its artifacts and 17th century houses are contemporary. The winery, along with the dairy, blacksmith, and barrel cooperage, are still operating. Children can visit the cobbler's workshop to observe the craft of handmade shoes, and depending on the season, the whole family can enjoy a ride on a horse-drawn wagon or sleigh.

While the museum is a vestige of practices from the past, it is a perfect place to begin an excursion into the wine country of Sédburgenland. Stop by the Gebietsvinothek Sédburgenland and sample some of the top 60 wines that are selected by jury annually from the region! With numerous boutique family wineries producing specialties like Blaufrénkisch from the Eisenberg appellation, you'll discover that winemaking continues to flourish in this idyllic region.

And while you're there........

...make sure you take in in a festival or three. Lower Austria's Wine Festival Season rustic wine cellar festivals and boisterous food and wine celebrations are legendary. Or why not indulge in luxurious seven course menus in elegant gourmet restaurants and glamorous gala evenings. There is a choice of 800 delicious events during the Lower Austria Fall Wine Festival and it is easy to plan. The lively festival season begins in August and continues through November.
