Small is beautiful

Isle of Kerrera

Scotland's tiniest islands are beckoning, and a holiday in Scotland, travelling to the lesser-known islands of Argyll, is both relaxing and surprising.

Away from the west coast hotspots that draw bigger crowds, you will discover islands where you’ll find a sense of tranquillity, as well as all the things that make island life so special.

Argyll’s smaller islands: Lismore, Easdale, Kerrera and Luing are great places to begin.

Argyll & the Isles are close to Scotland’s central belt, which means they are well serviced by large roads that are easy to navigate by car. There are frequent bus services in the area, and trains travel throughout the mainland section of the region. This includes special ScotRail Highland Explorer carriages which are designed for cyclists.

To finally reach your island destination you’ll take a short ferry ride – always an exciting adventure!

The lovely island of Luing

Sunrise on the Isle of Luing @fabsinthe

A former slate island which produced much of Scotland’s slate until the 1960s, Luing boasts picturesque villages and stunning views to Belnahua, Scarba and the Garvellachs.

The main hub of the island is Cullipool in the north-west of Luing. Daytrippers from Oban will love this place as it is an ideal location for a cycling or walking holiday, or simply to relax. This island is also home to a diverse variety of wildlife, including otters, hares, seals and dolphins.

You can drive or take public transport to Oban with a short ferry crossing from Seil. The ferry is run by Argyll & Bute Council
