Goaty restaurants |
If you book a table at Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant make sure you check out the roof. Chances are there may be some goats frolicking up there. In fact as you top the hill and head down the main street in Sister Bay, one cannot help but get excited. For right in the middle of town, you will spot the goats on the roof at Al Johnson’s. An icon for visitors for over 58 years, Al Johnson’s is an authentic Swedish family-owned restaurant where most days they are up there grazing the sod roof. It's quite a sight, and it's made this place one of the most famous restaurants in Door County, Wisconsin, USA.
Inside the casual carpeted dining room is more mainstream as young ladies in Scandinavian garb dish out limpa bread and Swedish meatballs. The menu offers Swedish fare: pancakes with lingonberries, whitefish, sandwiches, and salads. Read More.... Take a tour of the famed Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant, "the place with the goats on the roof." Not only are there in-the-kitchen demonstrations of how the restaurant's delicious Swedish pancakes and Swedish meatballs are made, interviews with the owners, but you can visit the goats' winter quarters, a hay-filled barn that plays National Public Radio all day long, to make being a wintering goat less tedious!
Keep up with the goats on Goat Cam....
By way of contrast you would possibly never expect a dairy producing fine chevre in such a tropical location, yet here it is, and what's more there is an 'only in America' twist to it. It seems the nimble-footed goats like a spot of surfing - well it's not quite like it sounds. See more....
There are tours of the farm and you can buy a bag of 'nibbles' to feed the goats....
.... or you can enjoy your own nibbles of a chevre flight, the ideal way to decide what cheeses you want to order in the shop.
While there are an impressive number of kids born at the dairy every year, please note: there are limits on the two-legged ones! |
