Ireland's wild secrets |
Turns out they're superstars of the Wild Atlantic Way and have even had a cameo role in Star Wars. Yes, we're talking about Ireland and County Kerry's otherworldly Skellig Islands stretching back to the sixth century! The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre is located on Valentia Island just off the famous Ring of Kerry on the South West Coast of Ireland. Dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage site Skellig Michael our visitor centre brings the magic and mystery of these famous rocks to you through graphics, film presentation, models, exhibition items, reconstruction and the sound of sea birds and lighthouse keeper ship to shore communication. Settlement began in the sixth century when a small group of monks retreated here. The artistry, creativity and ingenuity of these early settlers is still there to see. Little windows in the church built here frame the view of nearby Little Skellig, the sun warms the monastic village, which seems remarkably protected from the wind, and a vast expanse of sea and sky surrounds you. And, just like the monks all those centuries ago, you battle the elements to get here. Access to the island is seasonal (usually between summer and autumn), and weather permitting. Numbers visiting the island are limited, too, so booking in advance is highly recommended. And of course, don’t forget to wear a hardy pair of shoes… |
