Bali's day of silence |
Tawur Kesanga is a ritual procession (above) on the eve of Nyepi, and is celebrated a day before. The children carry flame torches, that have lit bonfires to symbolically burn ogoh ogoh monster evil spirits. (Pic: Arief Rahman Saan (Ezagren) Nyepi is the way Balinese people celebrate the beginning od each New Year. It is a day on which there is no noises at all - speaking, cars, bicycles, everything comes to a silent stop for twenty-four hours.
(Sanur Beach, Bali) Tourists intending to visit Bali in March 2015 should be aware that local custom requires that all people on the island observe a day of silence for Balinese New Year (Nyepi) from 6am on 21 March 2015 until 6am the following day. While this means the beaches will be deserted and the streets will be blissfully free of traffic, it also means that you will be required to stay in your hotel as well until time is up. . Make the most of it and enjoy a time of quiet contemplation and silence along with the locals.
