A walk around Old Tbilisi

You have already seen how the main thoroughfares of Tbilisi are busy and pedestrian-unfriendly. Step away and you will discover a web of smaller streets and lanes. Fortunately, at main intersections, the city has become tourist-savvy enough to erect good signage like this (above).

And where there are tourists, there will be souvenirs. Georgia is fridge-magnet friendly as you can see. As I love trying local food wherever we travel, and I collect chef figurines - these were a great temptation. Three lari? That's about $1.40 (AUD) or 85 cents (USD)

You will already have seen this crooked clock tower on the main feature, but as we visited twice we figured you might like to as well! You'll find out more about it HERE.....

...and HERE....

Off the grid, there is a whimsical feel to Tbilisi. It is as if the locals have had a veil lifted, and they are free now to speak their own language, sing their own songs, and express themselves in many ways - from brightly dyed hair to street art and murals.

It is estimated there are around 50,000 stray dogs in Georgia, but don't be worried - this dog is just taking a nap. He can do that without being hurried away, because that tag in his ear labels him as a 'good dog', showing that he has been vaccinated against rabies and also neutered.

As we walked around the block one morning near our hotel, we met a couple of Georgian gentlemen enjoying the sunshine. This one, sitting outside a rug shop, was so life-like we almost climbed the steps to shake his hand.

Nearby, perilously close to the traffic, this fellow was having 'just one more', but he could not be tempted to comment either.

We could only make out two words on this chalkboard footpath sign, but I think we knew what they were getting at with the cheese.

Of course there were many restaurants with more artistic offerings, and while you may not be able to make out the dish descriptions, those prices are certainly very affordable - and, as always in countries in this part of the world, the servings are generous and ideal for sharing in a group.

Some places come with no explanation - yet the strength  of this door and the craftsmanship of whoever made it was worth me pausing and taking a photograph of it. I had to wonder at what secrets it had seen, and who had passed through that opening.

Turn a corner anywhere in Tbilisi, and the mood may change instantly, delivering a sunny spot to relax and dine...

...or a place to buy delicious sun-ripened home-grown fruits.

A city of secrets and discoveries - Tbilisi is already underlined on my 'must visit again' list'.
