Reef rescuers |
With his passion for the ocean’s well-being and preventing plastic and pollution ruining marine life, singer and songwriter Jack Johnson recently paid a visit to the Coral Gardeners and Te Mana o Te Moana - two not-for-profit organisations based on The Islands of Tahiti, whose aims are to rescue and preserve the local marine environment. Honing in on his love of the ocean and our environment, Jack visited The Islands of Tahiti with his social action network called All At Once, an organisation that enables the public to make positive changes in local and global communities. Te Mana o Te Moana has been working to protect and care for sea turtles around The Islands of Tahiti for the last 15 years. Creating a rescue centre with programmes to provide medical supervision to cure injured turtles, the plan is to release the turtles back into the wild if their health and age means they are safe to do so. Over 500 sea turtles have been cared for over the years, including green sea turtles, hawksbill sea turtles, olive ridley sea turtles and loggerhead sea turtles. Over 50 percent of the turtles brought to the centre are wounded by human interaction - fishing nets, speargun hunting or plastic in the ocean. The Coral Gardeners is a group of 18-20 year old teens who are passionate about marine life and conservation of the ocean. They’re on a mission to teach the world more about the threat on coral reefs and to restore the Mo’orea reef through their very own conservation program. Through conferences with the general public, visitors, and schools, the Coral Gardeners educate adults and children of all ages about coral’s health and what they’re doing to restore the reef surrounding the islands, to demonstrate that we can all work towards saving reefs all around the world.
