Rubber Ducky's world tour |
Visitors to Sydney have been rubbing their eyes recently. Is that truly a massive yellow blow-up duck in lovely Darling Harbour, one of the city's watery playgrounds? The 26-metre tall duck, brainchild of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, will be floating here until January 23 as part of the Sydney Festival's celebrations. Hofman's plan is to send the inflatable rubber duck on a five-year mission around the globe -- including, so far, Auckland, New Zealand; Osaka, Japan; and France's Loire Valley. He;'s already created giant frogs and bunnies, but he's pretty happy with the duck, created in 2007. But why is he doing it? He has been quoted as saying: "The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn't discriminate people and doesn't have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them." He wants people to take a break from their daily routines and spread a little 'joy and astonishment'. |
