Seoul's Handbag Museum |
The brainchild of Kenny Park, a Korea-based supplier of handbags for labels including Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade and Tory Burch, the Simone Handbag Museum opened on Garosugil last month. This new Seoul museum houses more than 300 European pieces in its permanent collection over two floors and reserves the top floor for special exhibitions. Find out how the museum began.... The collection commences with a 16th-century English Sweatmeat purse (above) described in the catalog "The embroidered flowers, animals and insects on this purse echo the fashions worn by English nobility between 1560 and 1610. Men and women alike wore bodices heavily decorated with embroidery in silk, gold and silver threads, as well as seqiins, which were then known as 'Os.' Motifs were taken from popular texts, such as Claude Paradin's Devises Heroiques (1557) and Thomas Trevelyon's Miscellany (1608)." The collection includes modern bags such as the Birkin bag named after the actress and singer Jane Birkin for whom it was initially made by Hermes in the late 1990s as a a leather weekend bag. Skilled craftsmen construct each bag, which takes about 48 hours to complete. More details..... |
