Tahiti's temptations

The tantalising islands of Tahiti have put up their hands, saying 'choose us!'.

Particularly for those venturing out of lock-down in the southern hemisphere, it is a very tempting invitation indeed.

Check out the incentives:

  • strikingly beautiful nature - lush jungles, mountain peaks and vibrant coral reefs
  • a total of 118 islands offering every possible type of holiday imaginable
  • a place where you can be as active - or inactive - as you like
  • accommodation options include guesthouses run by local families
  • yacht charters in the blue lagoons
  • and, even, camping

All these (and more) add up to a destination suitable for every type of traveller.

If you have an urge to splurge, then Bora Bora & The Brando Resort are two perfect options. The celebrity-favoured resort, The Brando (above), which was made famous for being discovered by Marlon Brando is a remote, ultra-polished and eco-friendly island getaway and a love song to the South Pacific. The resort is nearing its goal to becoming fully carbon neutral and self-sustainable, which means that a splurged stay here doesn’t take a huge toll on the environment.

Those who also want to try something brand-new might be interested in renting the very first floating villa in Bora Bora in 2021. The eco-friendly boat with accommodation for up to eight guests, manufactured by ELYT Charter Tahiti has taken the overwater villa concept to the next level.

The remoteness of Fakarava means that it’s the perfect ‘offline adventure’ to be experienced in 2021.

Unplug from your virtual events, zoom calls, and scrolling through seemingly endless bad news, and head for the well-kept secret of The Islands of Tahiti, second largest of the Tuamotu atolls and considered a nature sanctuary, Fakarava reef is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and safeguards a variety of endemic wildlife. While the resorts at the island do have wifi, the connection is quite limited so you might as well switch off too, and just leave the phone and laptop in your bungalow for the entire stay.

Micro Destinations - Moorea is one of the hottest micro destinations. The heart-shaped island is less than 20 kilometres from sister island Tahiti and offers plenty of activities, restaurants and cafes, and all levels of accommodation.

Looking for lesser-known destinations? Head for Rurutu still very much a hidden gem in The Islands of Tahiti. This is a very different kind of Polynesian holiday, on the most northerly island in French Polynesia. The island has no overwater bungalows or beachfront hotels, no glitz and glamour. It's just a really laidback traditional island where travellers can stay in guesthouses run by the locals.

This hidden gem allows swimming with humpback whales among the reefs. Snorkellers can come up close to these magnificent creatures in crystal clear waters just a kilometre out from the shore.
