As the name - Indian Pacific - suggests, this epic (and upomarket) train-ride runs between Australia's Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Prefer to cut across the country the other way? Then there is the Indian Pacific, that travele East from Perth to Sydney< New South Wales.

Head for the hills - South Australia

As one of the country's earliest settlements, Adelaide (its capital) and the nearby hills, has always been popular. A day in Hahndorf, nestled amongst acres of vineyards and orchards, the charming village of Hahndorf is Australia's oldest German settlement, attracting about one million visitors a year.

But if you only have time fora city excursion, the hills will not disppoint - especially in autumn.Make sure that you taste some Australia's best wines.

Just a 15-minute drive from the heart of the city, the Adelaide Hills is the closest wine region, and boasts a range of crispy cool-climate classics.
