The world's biggest cave |
Son Doong Cave, meaning Mountain River cave, located near the Laos–Vietnam border, is the biggest known cave in the world.
(Picture credit: Doug Knuth) Discovered by a local man in 1991, there’s a large fast-flowing subterranean river inside, and the whistling sound of wind and roar of a rushing stream in the cave, as well as the steep descent, had until then prevented locals from entering the cave Vietnam had large caves before, as until this one was discovered, the world biggest cave (Phong Nha Cave) was also in this country. However Son Doong cave is five times larger. Its biggest chamber is more than five kilometres long, 200 metres high and 150 metres wide. The cave contains some of the tallest known stalagmites in the world, up to 70 metres tall. What’s more, behind one feature, the Great Wall of Vietnam, were found cave pearls the size of baseballs! |
