| Slovenian artistic beehives |

In case you can't decide what these are, they are Slovenian beehives. In past centuries beekeepers painted the 'box ends' of their hives. But rather than simply decorating them with bright colours, it became the fashion to create little pictures depicting saints, people and animals, sometimes religious, sometimes educational but evry often also both humoristic and satirical. Many of them illustrated historical events, while others were to do with fables and moralistic tales. It is said that the painting was done for the protection of the apiarist as well as for the bees as it indicated the financial standing of the apiarist and helped the apiarist to remember, with the help of their images, what was happening with each individual beehive. |
