You could enjoy a dish like this in Lisbon. That's because Portugal's magnificent cuisine has migrated 1400 kilometres west of the mainland to this autonomous archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic.
September is still a good time to visit as the Azores are sub-tropical, bathed in the Gulf Stream.
Whale and dolphin watching are possible throughout the whole year.
São Miguel, nicknamed 'where volcanoes collide', is the easiest island to reach, with plenty to see and do. Ponta Delgada is a busy town where the main airport lies. The population of 140,000 is concentrated here, so the rest of the island is rustic. Stroll the town at night and discover hidden cafes and bars. The town does become a thriving metropolis when a cruise ship arrives. Furnas Lagoon (above) offers a place to relax.
